Does my FoodMarble need calibration?

I’m concerned about my results. Does my device need calibration?

If your FoodMarble results are different from what you expected, you may wonder whether your device needs to be calibrated.
FoodMarble devices are calibrated to a high standard after manufacturing and do not require routine calibration by the user. Their performance can be monitored remotely by our engineers if you have serious concerns. In most cases, however, an unexpected result is related to when or how the breath test was taken, natural changes in fermentation, or how the result is being interpreted - not a calibration issue.

Your results may naturally fluctuate

Each breath test provides a snapshot of the hydrogen and methane in your breath at that moment. These levels can rise and fall throughout the day depending on factors such as:

  • what and when you have eaten;
  • the fermentable carbohydrates in your meals;
  • the time that has passed since eating;
  • your individual digestive and gut-transit patterns; and
  • recent dietary, lifestyle or treatment changes.

For this reason, a result that is higher or lower than expected does not necessarily indicate a problem with your device. Focus on patterns across multiple readings rather than interpreting a single result in isolation.

Low or high scores do not automatically indicate a fault

Low scores generally mean that low levels of hydrogen and methane were detected at the time of testing. This may happen when fermentation is low, when you have eaten few fermentable foods or when you test before a fermentation rise occurs.
Higher scores indicate that more hydrogen or methane was detected. These may occur after eating fermentable foods and are most useful when reviewed alongside your meals and symptoms.
Neither a high nor a low score is inherently “good” or “bad,” and either can be a valid result.

Check your testing routine

For the most useful and consistent results:

  • follow the breath-test technique shown in the app;
  • test at consistent intervals throughout the day;
  • include readings before and after meals;
  • test into the evening, as fermentation may rise several hours after eating;
  • take breath tests indoors at a comfortable room temperature; and
  • keep the FoodMarble app and your device firmware up to date.

Your results may be more difficult to interpret if tests are taken infrequently or under very different conditions.

Do I need to calibrate my device at home?

No. FoodMarble devices do not require at home calibration.
If your results appear unusual, updating the app and firmware, reviewing your breath-test technique and tracking consistently for several days will often provide a clearer picture. Re-pairing the device and updating the app may help with connection or software issues, but these steps do not calibrate its sensors.

When should I contact FoodMarble Support?

Please contact our Support team if:

  • your readings change suddenly and remain unusual across several days;
  • you repeatedly receive results that do not vary despite testing at different times and after different meals;
  • your device consistently records unexpectedly low or high results;
  • you are unable to complete a breath test; or
  • the device behaves differently from usual or displays an error.

Include a brief description of the issue, when it began and screenshots of the relevant results where possible. Our team can review the information and determine whether further troubleshooting or a technical assessment is appropriate.
