Understanding Bloating and Your FoodMarble Results

Bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramps, and excess gas can be caused by a wide variety of factors. Your AIRE 2 is designed to track one specific type of activity in the gut: fermentation. While fermentation is a common cause of bloating, not all bloating episodes will be reflected in your fermentation scores.

1. Non-Food Triggers

Not all bloating is caused by what you eat. Stress, anxiety, fatigue, and even lack of sleep can all affect digestion and contribute to bloating. This is why we encourage you to log these lifestyle factors in the FoodMarble app — they can provide important context when symptoms don’t seem to match your fermentation results.

Sometimes bloating is caused by liquid rather than gas.

For example:

  • Drinking a large volume of water or other fluids quickly
  • Consuming certain sugary drinks or beverages that are high in sodium (electrolyte or sports drinks, broths, vegetable juices), which can pull more water into the gut

Since your FoodMarble device measures fermentation gases, these types of bloating won’t appear in your scores.

3. Gut Sensitivity

Some people’s digestive systems are more sensitive to changes in pressure or stretching in the gut. Even small amounts of gas or fluid can cause discomfort, pain, or bloating. This means you may feel symptoms even when your fermentation readings are low.

Why Logging Matters

When you notice symptoms that don’t align with your fermentation results, it’s important to log this information in the app.

By consistently tracking:

  • Meals
  • Symptoms (with severity)
  • Lifestyle factors (like stress, fatigue, and sleep quality)

…you can build a clearer picture of what’s driving your symptoms. Over time, patterns often emerge — for example, you may notice bloating is worse on days you sleep poorly, or after certain drinks rather than meals.

Important Takeaway

Your AIRE 2 gives valuable insight into fermentation, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. By combining breath testing with careful symptom and lifestyle logging, you can better understand the multiple factors that contribute to bloating — helping you take more control over your digestive health.
